CHAPTER 8: Legal and Ethical Use of Technology
CHAPTER 8
Ethics in Practice
EXPLORE
I will tell to my colleague that she needs to uninstall the software because it is protected by copyright. It is unethical when she has installed it to her computer without my knowledge and also I paid that software.
This activity aims for the students to determine wrong acts or doings with the use of school technologies.
Below are the different situations in the use of school technologies. Place yourself in each of the situation and internalize on the action you will do to solve the issues.
I will warn those three students for not following my instruction and instruct them to uninstall the downloaded games. I will suggest to the higher authority to install or purchase a program that would limit the access of students in using the internet especially in downloading unnecessary programs.
1. You as a teacher have purchased educational software for use in your class. Your colleague who is teaching the same subject borrows the purchased software and later installs the software in her own computer without your knowledge. You are aware that what she did was against the law. What will you do with this situation?
I will suggest to my classmate to limit or stop her access to the internet especially in site that she has experiencing the cyberbullying. I will tell her to interact with people that are not on virtual world so that she could express her feelings and she might be received constructive comments to improve again her self-esteem.
2. You instruct your students that whenever in the computer laboratory, internet access will be allowed for educational purposed only. However, three of your students accessed the internet for downloading of internet games and play while you discuss the lesson. What will you do with these three students? What will you suggest to the school heads to limit the access of downloading internet games?
3. You (as a student) are aware that one of your classmates is being cyber bullied by some of your classmates. The victim is losing her self –confidence and self-esteem due to the cyberbullying experiences. What will you do to help the victim and to stop cyberbullying?
It is better if I know the policy of the school regarding this matter. If the policy says it needs to report, I will report; warn if it says it needs to be warned. But as student, I will warn him because it is not good to see that adult is doing bad things especially inside the school.
4. While the class is busy doing their activity in the computer laboratory, you were requested by your teacher to ask the computer laboratory technician to assist in troubleshooting the computer unit. As you approached the technician, you saw that he was watching a malicious movie. The technician then immediately stopped the movie and told you to just stay quiet. You are aware that it is against the policy of the school. What will you do with this situation? Will you really just keep quiet like what the technician has told you?
